It is clear that we cannot use rapidshare for hosting our files anymore. One of the main requirements of the sharing on this site is that the files should be available for all free users without any form of registration. It is great to see that some users have tried to find loopholes in the new RS policy, but it seems like this will only be an imperfect solution regarding the real problem: That the links are not available for all our members and at all times.

We should start rebuilding our library. Searching through the database shows that 6855 movies are listed with megaupload links, still - after the MU breakdown. While the impressive 31827 movies are unavailable because of rapidshare links and their new policy. That adds up to 38682 out of 40635 movies having dead links. This is an incredible amount of dead links, making the undisputed majority of all movies listed on the site dead. But we cannot abandon the great SMz project out of that sole reason. This is already an incredible database of information. We only lack the movie links. In the past, we have depended on a small number of highly dedicated members to cope with the necessary re-uploading, but we now need the help of our entire community to share the workload. If we get together, old uploaders, recent uploaders, earlier downloaders, everybody, we could start to rebuild our collection. Our focus should be on reuploading our favorite movies again.

We should try to do this systematically, so we admins are planning on some steps to get things working. One possible means is to get the Bonus Collections going again. Focusing on one or two collections in particular each second week. We will try out this in December.

It is important is that we use a variety of file hosts. We must diversify our portfolio. Using one file host in general, like RS, makes us extremely vulnerable to that sole file hosts policy changes or shut downs. At the same time, it is important that we use the file hosts that work with the ethics of this site. It should promote the purpose of SMz instead of working against it. This is the main goal of the
list of recommended file hosts, that we have been working on together. Many thanks to all those who are helping us to research and vet replacement file-hosts at this crucial time. If we diversify ourselves among these various allowed file hosts, we will find that SMz can still be the site for obscure and rare cinema, like it always has been.
